Cherokee County Historical & Preservation Society Looks To Restore Cabin
In Ethel Morrison Park 23 Sep 2015 Joey Weaver
A vast majority of Wednesday’s Cherokee County Parks & Recreation Board meeting once again centered on the cabin at Ethel Morrison Park adjacent to the Cherokee County Public Library in Centre.
Members of the Cherokee County Historical & Preservation Society were in attendance and presented their intentions for the structure.
Danny Crownover who serves as the Vice-President for the group said in his presentation that the goal is to stabilize and repair what has been damaged by decay or insects, which is usually preferable to replacing it. Retaining the log rather than substituting a new one which preserves the buildings integrity including historic tool marks and the wood species which may no longer be obtainable in original dimensions.
Crownover also noted during his presentation that the cabin will be preserved using the recommendations of the Alabama Historic Commission and the National Park Service.
The Parks Board has decided that they will notify the Historical Society that they can move forward with the project if they provide a detailed, comprehensive plan outlining exactly what work will be done from start to finish.
The Historical & Preservation Society said that they plan to approach both the City of Centre as well as the Cherokee County Commission for assistance with the project.
